Andrew Hunt

Record Producer - Songwriter - Mix Engineer - Recording Engineer - Musician

Thanks for wanting to find out more.

What is it I do?:

I see recorded music as ‘art’, whatever the genre, it’s ‘art’ and I love it passionately. I have a deep respect for creating it and always set the bar as high as I can for quality.

I try to be what I believe a producer should be: To go above and beyond in helping the artist make the best record they can, never to copy or repeat, to always look forward and create something new.

This could involve something simple like bringing in new influences, maybe it’s helping focus the song to make it work as hard as it can, or helping the singer to try different ways of singing the lyric to get the most out of the words. Then again, it may be starting from a blank page and letting the creation grow. I’m as happy looking at well formed demos as I am starting with nothing.

As a writer, I do exactly the same.

How do I work?:

Solo or a band, it’s not dissimilar.

I need to find out your likes and dislikes to help you achieve the best you can. So we always spend time getting to know each other before we work together. The fit has to be right for both of us. If it is, we’ll start.

I usually find whatever the situation, once we start, we go deeper and deeper into the development of you, the artist. We work out exactly what the best next step is to take for you artistically and as importantly, how to take it.

The quality of the song is so important to me, this includes the lyrics. Once we’ve pushed the song as much as we can, I spend time ‘letting the song speak to me’ and sure enough, the record forms in my head. I can hear it as clearly as I could if it were on the radio. I know it’s right because I’ve spent enough time with you to know it’s right. Then we set about creating it.

I can find the right studio (if we need one - I’ve got good connections at most UK studios), the right musicians (if I’m not working with a band), often I’ll play many of the instruments myself, or program them if that’s more suitable. It may be that a period of rehearsals and routining is required before we go into the studio.

I’ll carefully consider the arrangement and each sound, or sample if we’re going that way but I do love engineering, so I usually find the best (and most fun) approach is to craft the sounds ourselves and record them in a room, with microphones.

I’m happy working in large studios if that’s the right option, I’m also happy working out of my own room, which is well equipped.

I love to hear the space in the record. An artist once told me my records sounded like ‘dioramas’ (dioramas are the little scenes made in shoe boxes.) I love this description! Sound you can walk around.

How did I start?:

I grew up in the Midlands and started out on clarinet. At the age of 8, electric guitars came into my life and that was that. I played in bands straight away, fronting bands through the Midland’s pub and club circuit for as long as I remember growing up and learned a lot.

Aged 20, I moved to London to study art and I’m still here. Over the years I’ve been offered a number of publishing and production deals as a singer/songwriter. These have included deals with J. Albert & Sons (AC/DC, The Easybeats) and Bird & Bush (Stereophonics).

Whilst playing session guitar on a record, circumstances changed and I was suddenly asked to produce it. I loved it!

From that moment on I worked as hard as I could to hone my skills, not only as a writer but as a producer and engineer too.

I understand what it’s like to be a singer, to be on stage, to be an artist, to be in bands, to tour, to write and to be in a studio. I understand the sensitivities and struggles we go through as creatives and I understand how hard this industry can be. So I come at making records from that standpoint.

What can I do for you?:

If you have great songs that are still at the ideas stage, or great demos, I can help you make them into ‘records’.

If you’re an established artist but you’ve hit a creative wall, I can help you find a new path and I will happily write with you if you’re looking for collaboration.

Maybe you’ve taken a project as far as you can and would like some input in the final stages to finish it off.

Maybe you’re after someone to mix your record. Maybe that’s someone who really ‘gets’ what you’ve done. Maybe it’s someone who can do something a little ‘different’ with it.

Whatever it is you need, get in touch and we can start chatting about it.

I’ll look forward to hearing from you

Andrew
